Spring Cleaning - Getting Your Outdoor Spaces Ready

February 27, 2025

It’s about time for spring cleaning, and that’s a great time to get your deck ready for a summer of entertaining and relaxing.   A good cleaning is a great way to prepare for the warmer months and ensure that your deck is safe and ready for use. Here is a checklist of essential cleaning steps, along with problems to look for that could indicate safety concerns.  If you see anything that causes you concern, call Builders America.  We’ll check it out and advise you on what is needed.  Together, we can prevent small problems from becoming big problems and safety hazards.

Spring Cleaning Checklist for Decks:

1. Clear Debris

Start by removing any leaves, dirt, and debris that may have accumulated over the winter. This will help prevent mold and mildew buildup and allow you to see any damage.

2. Sweep the Surface

Sweep the deck thoroughly to get rid of any small debris that may be left behind.

3. Pressure Wash (If Needed)

Use a pressure washer (gently) to remove dirt, grime, or algae, especially from composite or wood decks. Be cautious with pressure settings to avoid damaging wood. Use a low pressure and a tip with a wide angle.  If your deck is painted or stained, it’s best to test a small area first to ensure the pressure washer won’t strip the finish.

4. Scrub the Surface

If you notice stubborn stains or mildew, use a scrub brush and a deck cleaner that’s safe for your deck material.  Behr Wood and Deck Cleaner is one of the best for both pressure treated and composite decks.

5. Check and Clean Gutters and Downspouts

When cleaning decks, people sometimes forget to look up.  Clean out gutters and downspouts near the deck to ensure waterflows properly away and doesn’t accumulate near the deck.  Also, trim back tree branches that might be overhanding the deck and dropping excessive debris on the deck.

6. Inspect Railings and Balusters

Make sure the railings are securely attached to the deck and the balusters are stable. Tighten any loose screws or bolts.

7. Inspect and Clean Stairs

Check the stairs for any signs of wear, rot, or loose steps. Clean any grime from stair treads to ensure they’re not slippery.

8. Stain or Seal the Deck (If Needed)

After cleaning, you may want to stain or seal the deck if the decking is made of pressure treated wood. This helps protect against the elements and keeps the deck looking fresh. Wait for a dry, warm day for this task, at least 24 hours after pressure washing.

Safety Problems to Look For:

1. Loose or Wobbly Railings

Check for any signs of instability in the railings, especially if they wobble when you push or pull on them. Loose railings can pose a major safety hazard.

2. Rotten or Soft Wood

Tap on the wood to check for soft spots. If you notice areas that feel spongy or damp, they may be rotting. Wood rot compromises the integrity of your deck and can lead to structural failure.

3. Cracked or Splintered Wood

Look for cracked or splintered boards that could cause injuries. Splinters can catch on clothing or skin, and cracks can worsen over time, leading to unsafe conditions.

4. Loose or Rusty Fasteners

Check all screws, nails, and bolts to ensure they are securely fastened. Loose fasteners can lead to instability. Also, watch for rust, which can indicate weakened metal parts.

5. Sagging or Uneven Decking

Look for signs of sagging or unevenness in the deck. This can indicate structural issues, such as rotting joists or support beams that are no longer functioning properly.

6. Unstable Steps or Stair Treads

Check the stairs to ensure each step is securely attached and that there are no broken or missing treads. Stairs that are unstable can be dangerous, especially when wet.

7. Mold or Mildew Growth

Look for mold, mildew, or moss growth, especially on steps and in shaded or damp areas of the deck. These can make the deck and steps slippery and unsafe.

8. Insect Infestation

Look for signs of insect damage, such as small holes in the wood, which can indicate termites or carpenter ants. An infestation can weaken the deck’s structure.
